Cedars Wins National, Regional Awards

Cedars recently won second place in a national student newspaper contest, and several staff members earned awards in a regional contest, including two first-place awards.

In the College Media Association annual Apple Awards, Cedars took second in the Best Newspaper category in 2013 for four-year schools with fewer than 5,000 students. The Apple Awards categories honor publications. There are no categories for individuals.

Cedars placed behind the Baker Orange of Baker University in Kansas. The Rice Thresher of Rice University in Houston placed third.

Cedars staff members earned recognition in six categories in the Society of Professional Journalists 2013 Mark of Excellence Awards from Region 4 (Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, western Pennsylvania) for small papers (fewer than 10,000 students). Only Slippery Rock University’s student paper with three firsts and four finalists placed in more categories than Cedars.

In the newspaper division, Zack Anderson and Madison Troyer won in general news reporting for stories covering actions by the trustees involving the philosophy major and other issues. Anderson, Holly McClellan and Mary Miller won the in-depth reporting category for a group of stories that covered budget changes affected by the trustees establishing a $4 million fund, the ERAP funding cutand how lower budgets are affecting other area colleges.

The Cedars first-place winners will move on to the national Mark of Excellence competition among category winners from the 12 SPJ regions. National winners will be notified in the late spring and will be recognized at Excellence in Journalism 2014in Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 4 to 6. The awards are judged by professionals with at least three years of journalism experience.

Cedars staffers also earned recognitions as finalists in two other newspaper categories and in two online categories.

Nate Spanos was recognized in feature writing for a story about Taylor Minor and Stoney Creek Roasters. Beau Michaud was honored in sports writing for a story about Cedarville’s new swim club.

In online news reporting, Lauren Eissler, Nathan Pilling, Caleb Smith and Jillian Philyaw were honored for a their report on the chapel service held in honor of Pastor Bob Rohm. In the best use of multimedia category, a story, video and photos about V Scites written and produced by Kate Norman, Nathan Pilling and Madison Sternberg was recognized.

The regional awards honor the best in student journalism. As such, judges were directed to choose only those entries which they felt were outstanding work worthy of such an honor. If the judges determined that none of the entries rose to the level of excellence, no award was given.
