Winans Chocolates + Coffees was founded by Max and Dick Winans in 1961 in Piqua, Ohio. It was originally called Winans Carriage House Candies. When Max retired in the early 90s, his daughter Laurie and her husband Joe took over the business. They began adding small batch, house-roasted coffee to the Winans menu. They began to grow the business from one location to multiple franchised regional locations throughout the state. They now have 19 locations all across Ohio.
This coffee shop has a classic, warm and inviting environment at all of their stores. Winans has delicious coffee, tasty non-coffee drinks, and a wide variety of their authentic handmade chocolates to choose from. It has ample seating for socializing with friends, and it is usually calm and quiet so it makes for the perfect study spot. There are locations in Springfield, Beavercreek, and Dayton so Cedarville students can travel only 30 minutes or less to get to a Winans location.
Their specialty lattes are only $5.75, which is a similar price to well-known coffee shops such as Starbucks or Dunkin. I got a large, hot Wurtle mocha made with half-and-half and paid $6.20. This is what I usually pay for a Breve drink at Starbucks, so the price wasn’t shocking to me. I would say that this drink specifically isn’t my favorite because it’s not very sweet, which is something I like from my coffee. If you like more coffee flavor than sweetened flavors, you would probably like Winans coffee.
Like most chocolate shops, the price of chocolate is based on the weight of your order. I highly recommend getting a few pieces of chocolate to try if you go to this coffee shop for your next study session.
Their holiday drinks are out now, including a Sugar Cookie latte, a Peppermint Mocha, and a Frosty Mint Oreo frappe. You can also find some other holiday drinks in-store that are specific to certain locations. Their holiday or limited time flavored lattes are usually my favorite drinks, so I would highly recommend giving those a try.
In addition to their drinks and chocolate, their store has a plethora of packaged items to buy in-store. They have specialty boxes of chocolate, wrapped goodies, and bagged coffee along with various gift baskets you can purchase in store. It is really cool to look around at their unique and delicious gifts they have spread out around the store.
If you need a cozy spot to talk with a friend, or just relax this holiday season, I’d highly recommend grabbing a coffee and some chocolate at Winan’s in the near future.
