Lady Jackets Dominate Ursuline in 10-Point Win

The Cedarville Lady Jackets won their second game in a row on Wednesday night, overcoming Ursuline 85-75. This improves their record to 2-1 on the season, following a win against Findlay on December 5th. Ursuline falls to 0-2 on the season. 

The Lady Jackets were led by another strong outing from senior guard Ashlyn Huffman, who scored 24 points and garnered nine assists in the win. She led the team in both of those categories. Junior Emily Chapman also contributed 16 points in the win, with sophomore Isabelle Bolender and junior Allison Mader scoring 14 and 13, respectively. Junior Lexi Moore led the team in rebounding with nine total boards. 

One thing that the Yellow Jackets saw as a strength coming into this season was their depth. They were excited to have a team where they believed each player could contribute on the court towards their success. Tonight, that proved true for the Lady Jackets. The Cedarville bench accumulated 22 points compared to the Ursuline’s 18. Sophomore Allie Marshall scored 6 points off the bench for the Lady Jackets along with Chapman’s 16. If the Yellow Jackets continue to have such strong support from their entire squad, then major success appears to be on the horizon. 

But, one of the biggest advantages the Yellow Jackets had over the Arrows tonight was minimizing their own turnovers and capitalizing on those from the opponent. Cedarville only committed 12 turnovers on the night, while the Ursuline squad amassed a whopping 20. These turnovers by Ursuline turned into 23 points for the Yellow Jackets, but the Arrows only garnered 12 points off of Cedarville. 

The Lady Jackets also dominated in the fast-break tonight, collecting 32 points off the opportunity compared to the Arrow’s 21 fast-break points. Cedarville’s domination off of turnovers and in transition went a long way towards their victory tonight and will spell continued success for the team in the future. 

Overall, it appeared that the Cedarville Lady Jackets just outplayed Ursuline tonight. They topped the Arrow’s in several categories including overall shooting with a percentage of 43.7 compared to Ursuline’s 40.5. 

Where the Lady Jackets found trouble was in the paint. Ursuline out-rebounded Cedarville 46 to 38. Consequently, this led to the Arrows contributing more second-chance points on the night, scoring 11 against Cedarville’s seven. Though the margin in this matter between the two teams tonight was not overwhelmingly large, Cedarville must seek to better assert their power in the paint.

The Lady Jackets now head home to prepare for a matchup against the Malone Pioneers on Saturday, December 12th. Cedarville will seek to win their 3rd game in a row, with tip-off coming at 1:00 PM in Cedarville.
