Cedars sports and online editor Abigail Hintz won two first-place awards in the recently announced Society of Professional Journalists’ regional Mark of Excellence Awards honoring collegiate journalists.
Hintz won in feature writing for a story about student Laini Bergthold’s experience after her family home was severely damaged by a tornado. Hintz won the sports writing category for a story about two Cedarville alums qualifying for the U.S. Olympic marathon trials.
Former Cedars editor-in-chief Tim Miller also won first place in breaking news for a story about the 2020 spring semester finishing online and commencement being postponed.
The winning entries will be entered in the national contest along with the winners from all 12 regions. Cedarville is in Region 4, which is comprised of Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia and western Pennsylvania. Cedars competes in the division against schools with enrollments under 10,000. Cedars writers have previously won two national awards and have been finalists several other times.
Cedars also earned finalist recognition in three categories. Miller was a finalist in sports writing with a story about women’s basketball player Allison Mader and what led her to Cedarville. Madeleine Mosher was a finalist in general news reporting for a story about nursing grad Stephen Bruce serving in a Samaritan’s Purse field hospital in New York last summer. And ReadCedars.com was a finalist in the best affiliated website category.
