Thursday evening, September 25, brought on two rare occurrences: a 6-0 victory and a double rainbow. The Cedarville women’s soccer team dominated the opposing Ursuline Arrows, achieving a three-game win streak.
Though quiet in the first 15 minutes, the crowd erupted as midfielder Katie Ulmer scored the first and only goal of the first half. This was Ulmer’s third goal of the season, making her the leading scorer for the Lady Jackets. Throughout the rest of the first, the Jackets held a dominant field position, ensuring the lead going into halftime.
Not for long did Ulmer stay the leading goal scorer of the season. Early in the second half, forward Evania McCandless matched Ulmer in scoring her third goal this season. This is no surprise for McCandless, who was just recognized as the NCCAA Athlete of the Week.
The second half left room for some exciting goals, each from a different player. At the 69th minute, forward Audrey Stanley scored her second goal of the season, along with three more goals from first-time season scorers Seren Johnson, Harriet Sandager and Ella Webb.
“The players, they know that they want to be better, that they can be better,” head coach Jonathan Meade said. “And so I think that is one thing that’s really helping us out. Everybody is trying to get better every day.”
The determination and aggression that have led the Lady Jackets through a 5-1-1 season record were evident on Thursday night. Each player demonstrated their desire to improve and continue working, regardless of the opponent.
Thursday night’s victory over Ursuline was a memorable game for each person there. Not only packed with exciting moments for many of the players, but also, how often is soccer played under a double rainbow? The excitement of Thursday’s game will no doubt carry the Yellow Jackets through the rest of the season, especially their next matchup on Saturday, September 27, at Malone University.
