The Cedarville Yellow Jackets suffered a loss to the Davis & Elkins Senators at home this past Thursday evening.
The Lady Jackets had plenty of scoring opportunities in the first half, but were unable to put the ball in the basket. Throughout the half, both teams played strong man-to-man defenses, so the lead for both teams in the last three minutes of the game was never more than two points.
With 43 seconds left in the half, the Senators’ Stephanie Wooten made a layup to tie the score at 31-31. The Jackets attempted a 3-pointer, but missed. The teams kept the game fairly even, with the score being tied four times in the first half. Kayla Jenerette was the leading scorer for the Yellow Jackets in the first half with eight points and Kaysie Brittenham was a close second with seven.
Both teams fought hard in the second half, each knowing the game was on the line. Danielle Spiliotis and Kayla Linkous had a battle of their own with the Senators’ Sharmaine Baker in the post positions. The game was once again tied 48-48 with 20 minutes left in the game.
The Lady Jackets tied the score with only 1:13 left. However, the Senators’ Wooten was able to break through the Lady Jackets’ defense and put a layup in the basket with only nine seconds left, giving the Senators the lead. Raegan Ryan’s final three-point attempt bounced off the rim and the Lady Jackets lost 76-75.
“Today was a struggle for reasons that I don’t understand,” coach Kirk Martin said. “But we had difficulty playing hard and difficulty executing what we hoped to get done. I think it just kind of typifies that they got all the way to the rim without a bucket at the end, and we struggled with that all night long. Very disappointing and not how we’ve been playing. The good part about it is tomorrow’s a new day and we’ll just get after it and see what we can do. I hope that we play harder and better (for the next conference game on Saturday).”
