The Cedarville women’s basketball team picked up their third win of the year tonight, defeating Tiffin University 84-83.
The first half was evenly matched, neither team able to pull away. Foul trouble was a problem for both teams, as each reached the double bonus in the half. Headed into the half, the score was tied 37-37.
Tiffin came out of the half in a 2-3 zone, which the Lady Jackets took advantage of, starting the half on a 5-0 run. Cedarville didn’t look back even as Tiffin switched back to man-to-man, extending their lead to as much as 12.
The foul trouble continued for the visiting Dragons as the Lady Jackets were in the bonus just seven minutes into the half and the double bonus just over a minute later. The trouble continued for the Lady Jackets as well as senior guard Kayla Jenerette was forced to the bench with her fourth foul with more than 10 minutes remaining.
Tiffin slowly fought back, cutting the lead to two with eight seconds remaining and were forced to intentionally foul Taylor Vander Plas, who made both free throws, prompting a celebratory “YEAH!” from Coach Martin. Tiffin made a three at the buzzer, finalizing the score at 84-83.
In a game dominated by the whistle, neither team was able to take advantage of the free throw opportunities, the teams shooting a nearly even 69% (31 of 45) for Tiffin and 72% (33 of 46) for Cedarville. By the end of the game, 66 fouls were called and 91 free throws were shot.
Jenerette and Raegan Ryan both scored 14 points for the Lady Jackets with Deborah Gordon adding 13 and Deborah Chandler scoring 10.
With the win, Cedarville moves to 3-2 on the season. They host Urbana on Tuesday, Dec. 3, at the Callan Athletic Center.
