Cedars staff members won 10 awards for their work during 2015 in the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence regional competition. The awards were presented April 2 at the regional conference in Cincinnati.
Photographer Campbell Bortel placed first in two categories, sports photography and general news photography.
Sports editor Jon Gallardo won the sports writing category for a feature story about Justice Montgomery, a transfer athlete from a Division I school. Just Sayin’ columnist Erik Johnson ’15 won the column writing category for his February, March and April 2015 Just Sayin’ columns.
The winning entries will be entered in SPJ’s national competition and compete against the winning entries from the other 11 regions. Region 4 includes schools in Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia and western Pennsylvania. Cedars won eight regional awards last year.
Cedars received the most awards in its small school division this year, which includes schools with enrollment of fewer than 10,000.
SPJ also recognizes up to two finalists in each category. Cedars’ finalists included:
- Campbell Bortel: feature photography
- Kari Barnhill: general news photography
- Jon Gallardo: September, October and December 2015 Just Sayin’ columns
- Rebekah Erway: general news writing for a story about Cedarville’s partnership with Clearwater Christian College
- Anna Dembowski: feature writing for a story about “The Village” blog
- Staff: in-depth reporting for a package about Cedarville’s academic advising process.
Cedars received the Frank E. Deaner Award for Excellence in College Journalism from the Ohio Newspaper Association in February.
