The Lady Jackets pulled through on an overtime goal to defeat Trevecca Nazarene 1-0 in the second overtime Thursday. Freshman Hannah Atkinson netted a goal into the left corner with two and a half minutes left to win the game.
Cedarville head coach Jonathan Meade said it was a hard-fought victory.
“I gotta give a lot of credit to Trevecca,” Meade said. “They came out and gave us a lot to handle.”
The game started with Cedarville on the front foot for the first 15 minutes, but the well-organized Trevecca defense successfully kept the Jackets at bay. Trevecca then went on the offensive with a shot that went just over the bar. The first half continued with both teams struggling to find a major opening to score. During halftime, Meade subbed in freshman goalkeeper Allison Garlock for Hanna Harris.
The second half started with Trevecca looking very dangerous offensively. They nearly had the first goal of the match from five yards out, but the shot went over the goal. Trevecca’s pressure continued throughout the second half with Garlock making some good saves to keep the game even. However, Garlock had a handball outside the box with one second left on the clock. Garlock received a yellow card a foul, and the Trevecca free kick went over the goal. The game then went into a golden goal overtime with two periods.
Trevecca dominated the first overtime and very nearly had a winner, but Garlock had a great save to keep the game scoreless. Trevecca kept putting pressure on Cedarville’s defense, but the first period of overtime ended without a goal.
The second overtime had a much different feel with Cedarville pressing a lot harder offensively. Cedarville had some chances, but could not find a game winner until two and a half minutes into the second overtime when Atkinson scored the game winning goal.
“Both Hanna and Allison were superb,” Meade said.
The Lady Jackets will look to continue this momentum when they play Kentucky Weslyan at home Saturday.
