The Cedarville Lady Jackets extended their winning streak to five games with a 68-51 win over Alderson Broaddus on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Jackets won in front of a large crowd that was boosted by visitors for Alumni Night and Lil’ Sibs Weekend.
Cedarville head coach Kari Hoffman enjoyed having a substantial crowd to see the Lady Jackets win.
“It was a really fun environment to play in,” Hoffman said. “It reminded me of the old days of Cedarville basketball.”
Ellie Juengel lead the Lady Jackets in scoring with 14 points in just 13 minutes. The sophomore went 4-6 from the 3-point line.
“We needed someone to step up and give us a spark,” Hoffman said. “I’m really proud of Ellie for knocking down some huge shots.”
Hoffman also said Juengel did a great job of calming down the team during offensive disarray.
Regina Hochstetler scored 12 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists. She also made both of her free throw attempts, raising her season percentage to 92.5. She is now more than five percentage points ahead of the current school record.
Emily Williams added 11 rebounds in the contest, giving her two straight games with 10 or more rebounds.
Cedarville jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter and kept it for most of the first half. With 5:00 left in the opening quarter, Juengel splashed a 3-pointer to extend the Lady Jackets’ lead to 9-2.
Alderson Broaddus mounted a small comeback late in the first, using an 11-4 run to take the lead. With 37 seconds left in the first quarter, the Battlers hit a 3-pointer to take a 16-15 lead.
Cedarville’s Kaitlyn Holm jumped the passing lane to steal a pass late in the first, which led to her getting fouled hard on the other end. Holm made both of her free throws to give her team a 17-16 lead to end the first quarter.
Cedarville scored the first five points of the second quarter to take a 22-16 lead with 8:40 left.
The two teams swapped baskets for most of the quarter, but Cedarville gained its first double digit lead with 3:58 left in the quarter. Juengel hit another 3-pointer to give the Lady Jackets a 31-21 lead.
At the half, Cedarville still had a somewhat comfortable lead with a 33-25 advantage at the end of two quarters.
In the third, the Lady Jackets were able to extend its lead slightly, and jumped to a 12-point lead with 4:18 left in the quarter.
With 1:43 left, one of the Battlers was fouled on a shot by Holm. After the play, the two got tangled up, and both were assessed technical fouls after a long discussion by the officials.
Alderson Broaddus made both technical foul free throws and then made both free throws for the shooting foul. Hochstetler took the two technical foul free throws for Cedarville and made both. After the incident, Cedarville still led 47-39.
Holm was taken out of the game, as the situation gave her four fouls and did not return to the game. The junior finished with eight points.
Cedarville went on a 15-0 run to put the game out of reach directly after the technical fouls.
Senior forward Christina McQueen saw her first home action of the season late in the fourth. She finished with three points.
The Lady Jackets’ (14-8, 6-3 G-MAC) next game will be at Ursuline Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. The Arrows (17-5, 9-0 G-MAC) clipped Cedarville in the last meeting on Jan. 21, 70-68.
