Several Cedars staff members combined to earn a Mark of Excellence award in the Society of Professional Journalists annual regional competition, announced recently at the Region 4 conference at Point Park University in Pittsburgh.
The winning entry was in the in-depth reporting category for the newspaper’s special edition of stories in April, 2017, about the efforts that go into missions at Cedarville. As a category winner, the missions package will be eligible for a national award in which it will compete against winners from the other 11 regions. Cedarville competes against schools with enrollments under 10,000 students. Region 4 is comprised of schools in Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia and western Pennsylvania.
National winners will be notified in later in the spring and recognized at the Excellence in Journalism conference in September in Baltimore. Cedars won a first-place national award in 2013 in the in-depth reporting category.
Alex Hentschel and Erica Zichi were also recognized as one of two finalists in Region 4 in other categories.
Hentschel placed in the general news reporting category for her story this past spring about the possibility of concealed carry being approved on campus. Zichi placed in the online/digital feature videography category for a report on ministries at Cedarville. The online categories were not split into enrollment divisions.
MOE entries are judged by professional journalists with at least three years experience.
