Lady Jackets Softball Swept by Indy

A Lady Jackets comeback was stopped just short in the second game of a doubleheader on Tuesday, as Cedarville softball lost both of its games against Indianapolis 5-2 and 8-3. The two losses bring the Lady Jackets’ seven-game win streak to an end.

The Lady Jackets (23-13, 12-2 GMAC) had opportunities to score in the first game, but were unable to take full advantage. They had the bases loaded in each of the first three innings, but came away with just two runs. No Lady Jacket had more than one hit or one RBI in the game.

“We actually beat ourselves in that first game,” head coach Wes Rowe said. “We didn’t come through in the first couple of innings when we could’ve scored.”

The Greyhounds outhit the Lady Jackets 6-3 in the first game. Despite a solid game from pitcher Morgan Arbogast, the Jackets had trouble on defense.

“We gave up some runs we shouldn’t have given up,” Rowe said.

The Greyhounds jumped to a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning of the second game after a three-run home run. But a double in the fifth inning from sophomore Danae Fields allowed sophomore Hannah Lord and senior Kaitlyn Woerner to score to cut the lead to two.

Later, junior Avary Humes grounded out to first, but Fields scored to bring their deficit to one. But the Greyhounds scored four unanswered runs in the seventh inning to put any hopes of a comeback to rest.

Freshman McKenna Smith pitched the second game for the Lady Jackets, with three strikeouts on the evening.

“McKenna actually didn’t pitch a bad game,” Rowe said. “She really just made one bad pitch, the home run on a 3-0 pitch.”

Lord finished with two hits and Fields added two RBIs, but the offensive firepower of the Greyhounds was too much for the Lady Jackets.

The two losses against a good Greyhounds team come before three straight G-MAC opponents this week for the Lady Jackets. They travel to Ohio Valley on Tuesday before coming back home to face Ursuline on Friday and Lake Erie on Saturday. Coach Rowe said the two games will help his team grow.

“It shows us what we have to do to compete with the top teams,” he said. “It’s far better to play a tough team and lose than play a weak team and win.”
