The Lady Jackets had a dominating performance in their Homecoming game Saturday afternoon when they took down the Alderson Broaddus Battlers 5-0. It was a well-rounded performance from the Jackets with four different players getting on the board. Rachel Wiggins, Aleah Martone and Bex Valloney all got on the score board, as well as freshman Mary Kate Wyer who got her first two collegiate goals on Saturday. Cedarville is now 4-4 on the season and 3-1 in the G-MAC. The win moves them to a fourth place standing in the conference.
Head coach Jonathan Meade said this after the match, “We’re happy to get the five goals, glad that a lot of different players got to play today.”
Saturday’s lineup held some new faces and different positioning for the Jackets. A notable absence was sophomore forward Olivia Hoffman who has had a very impactful season thus far. Coach Meade said several members of the team were impacted by illness this week and were not well enough to play.
The first five minutes were tame, with little action being produced by either team. It didn’t take long, however, for the Jackets to settle in and begin dominating the tenth-ranked Battlers. A slew of shots came around the fifth minute, but nothing went into the net. Then, in the tenth minute, Valloney sent a through ball to Wiggins who slotted it past the Alderson Broaddus goalkeeper.
That wasn’t enough for the Jackets as just one minute later forward Martone settled a rebound from the keeper and calmly finished it. She was assisted by Taylor Noll.
For the rest of the half, the Jackets were completely in control. The score was 2-0 until the 44th minute, when a missed clearance by Alderson Broaddus gave freshman Mary Kate Wyer a perfect set up to put her team up 3-0, and she did just that. It was her first goal of the season.
The Jackets went into the locker room with 17 shots, 7 on goal and 7 corner kicks over the course of the half. This trumped the Battlers’ stats, which showed zero shots, zero on goal and one corner kick.
The second half was a little tamer than the first half, though Cedarville’s chances were just as quick and often. Their defense shut down any glimpse of a chance that the Battlers saw. The lack of scoring came mostly from Cedarville’s mistakes, as the Battler’s goalkeeper was forced to make few saves.
Wyer got her second of the day in the 78th minute off of an assist from Noll, which was her second of the day as well.
With only five minutes to play, the Jackets decided to add to the blowout. Valloney made a left side run that resulted in a blocked shot after the goalie came off her line. She was able to collect the rebound and chip it into the net towards the far post from a tight angle, putting Cedarville up 5-0.
Wyer was happy with her team’s performance, saying, “I thought we played really well and together, especially just starting out the game strong.”
The Jackets now hit the road until October 24, beginning the stint away from home on October 10 at Findlay University.
