Book Review: ‘Go Set A Watchman’

Reading Harper Lee's "Go Set A Watchman" is like walking down an old familiar trail. You see the same trees, but they look a little bit older; the familiar tread somewhat more worn than you remember. But all the while you're walking with the assurance that it's the same path it's always been. Your walking companion Jean Louise Finch, better known as "Scout," guides you and points out the changes she sees just as you do. In many ways Jean Louise has changed and stayed the same, but then ...

"War Room," the newest production by the Kendrick Brothers (creators of Facing the Giants, Fireproof and Courageous), shows this struggle and the key to overcoming it – prayer. The movie follows the life of wife and mother Elizabeth Jordan (Priscilla Shirer) as she attempts to rekindle the relationship with her husband Tony (T.C. Stallings). After Elizabeth's newest client, Miss Clara (Karen Abercrombie), suggests Jordan ...

Student Spotlight – Calvin Hitchcock: Composer

Music has the ability to bring a story or a concept to life, and that is what sophomore composition major Calvin Hitchcock said he seeks to do in his work. “I work conceptually, so I really like to have an idea of either a story or concept behind what I am doing,” Hitchcock said. Calvin’s advisor and piano teacher, Charles Clevenger, said one of the more prominent characteristics of Hitchcock’s work is the emotion. “Calvin crafts his ideas, and it shows up in the shapes of ...

Opening the Mic

Beans-N-Cream When Beans-N-Cream, a coffee shop in Cedarville, moved to its current location in 2008, manager Mindy Pergram and her husband, Tony (known as "The Barber of the 'Ville"), made sure music would be a part of the new location. “He’s always been into music,” said Pergram, referring to her husband. “When Beans moved to this spot, we said, ‘We have to have a stage.’” And so in the corner of the coffee shop, there’s a stage designed for performers to play in ...

Missions Organizations Provide Creative Opportunities for Students

Although the primary view has been that only medical students and teachers are useful overseas, missionaries said that’s beginning to change. Creativity is becoming a new tool for evangelism – and missionaries said that is extremely effective. Two missionaries working with Africa Inland Mission (AIM) – who cannot be named because of the nature of their ministry – said that creative art opens doors for evangelism. Students have opportunities to build relationships with people ...

‘The Village’ Expands, Rebrands

The style blog a few Cedarville students formed in late 2013 has expanded into a national – and international – virtual entity called “The Village.” What began as a style blog highlighting students around campus is now stretching across the United States and across the pond to England, resembling more of a website than a blog. Bethany Gustin, a Cedarville senior, said “The Village” has grown to a staff of about 50 people since Cedars’ February 2014 story introducing the ...

A Cappella Group to Release 2nd Album

Cedarville’s a cappella group The Inversions will release their second album, “All Along,” April 7, which reflects how the group’s grown since its birth four years ago. “It is kind of a metaphor for the group and how we’ve grown,” said Robert Rhodes, a junior who’s been a member of the Inversions since his freshman year. “Four years ago we were a dream, now we are a family, and you now hold in your hand, aka the EP, what we’ve dreamt of all along. So the idea of it’s ...
