Letter from the editor

Dear Reader, I have a confession. At least once a week, I ask myself the question: Why am I in journalism school? As a well-informed, reading-literature-in-my-field, journalist-in-training, (those are definitely all compound modifiers) it’s impossible to avoid headlines like “ESPN Parts Ways with Another Longtime Host After Mass Layoffs” or “The Athletic Lays Off 20 Journalists in Reorganization.” The landscape of journalism, not just on college campuses, is shifting under my ...

Lady Yellow Jackets decimated by Ashland Eagles, fall 107-83

By: Julia Swain “That's probably the best team that's entered this gym in 25 years,” said Cedarville women’s basketball head coach Jason Smith.  Facing Ashland, the number one Division II team in the country, the Lady Yellow Jackets could only anticipate the 107-83 loss that they were handed. Nonetheless, they demonstrated fight and determination throughout the loss. The Lady Yellow Jackets started off strong, playing what Smith described as “their best first half maybe ...

Yellow Jackets’ explosive second half sees off aggressive Timberwolves

By: Jonathan Snyder As the Cedarville Yellow Jackets finished off a 10-0 run to start the 2nd half of their game against the Northwood Timberwolves, the scoreboard finally reflected the Jacket’s prowess in a 87-67 win.  Cedarville started off the game keeping the Timberwolves at bay, but never breaking away. There would always be something to keep the Timberwolves close, whether it be turnovers or defensive breakdowns. This led to a four-point lead for the Jackets at the close of ...

New-look Jackets cut down by nearly perfect T-Wolves

By: Jonathan Snyder The Northwood Timberwolves’ accurate passes and backdoor cuts carved up the Lady Jackets in a 92-74 loss for Cedarville. The Lady Jackets sported an all-pink uniform in honor of the Play4Kay initiative, designed to increase financial support for women’s cancer research. The Lady Jackets also rolled out a new starting lineup, as Makenna Fee and Taylor Strock were both unavailable. Abby Freeman and Leah Butterbaugh started instead and gave the Lady Jackets solid ...

Cedarville Men’s Basketball completes comeback against Malone

By: Maggie Fipps "We played a lineup I’ve never even put together in practice.” That’s not usually the phrase you want to hear from your head coach after a game. However, after the Cedarville men’s basketball team went down 12 points in the opening minutes of the first half, Head Coach Pat Estep knew he had to do something drastic.  “The lineup was all guards,” said Estep. “I was just trying to find five guys who could space them out.”  His out-of-the-box ...

Cedarville Women’s Basketball digs a deep hole early against Malone

By: Maggie Fipps Every coach adage, every cliche, sounds the same: ‘it doesn’t matter how you start, it matters how you finish.’ Sometimes, that finishing moment can erase the past. With 7 minutes left in the 4th quarter, senior guard Paige Garr glided around her defender, the ball lazily rolled into the net, and simultaneously the penalty whistle blew. Instantly, it seemed that the first three quarters of struggles would be washed away. The team gathered under the basket, certain ...

Cedarville outlasts Walsh in conference title rematch

By: Alan Brads Pressure mounted, tempers flared and tension built to the point of explosion, escalating to a raucous celebration after the Yellow Jackets’ 72-65 victory. These two schools competed in last year’s conference championship game, with Walsh winning the title, but a determined core group of Cedarville upper-classmen refused to let Walsh halt another winning streak. Every Walsh-Cedarville game is intense, and this game was no exception. Cedarville’s play embodied the ...

Cedarville overcomes turnovers to blow out Wilberforce, win 98-73

By: Julia Swain In a game riddled with turnovers and a poor three-point percentage, the Cedarville Men’s Basketball team prevailed with a 98-73 win over the winless Wilberforce University.  Despite missing their first 10 three-pointers, and finishing 5-20 (25 percent) overall, the Yellow Jackets found success in other areas of the floor, finishing with 50 points in the paint. The Bulldogs, however, had a hard time recovering from their 25 turnovers.  Head coach Pat Estepp ...

Cedarville Women’s Soccer Eliminated by Ferris State in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament

By: Maggie Fipps The snow was cleared, the slate was wiped clean, and the Cedarville women’s soccer team stepped onto the field with ice in their veins. However, the Ferris State Bulldogs prevailed, taking down Cedarville 3-1.  Ferris State literally kicked and screamed their way into this match, taking down Ashland on nine penalty kicks last week. Cedarville had an easier path, defeating McKendree 3-1. In the 25th minute, Ferris State’s leading scorer Isabella Zamborini ...

Cedarville’s Tough Defense Paves the Way for Season-Opening Win

By: Alan Brads It was a dream night for any team starting their basketball season. The Cedarville men’s basketball team obliterated the Truman State Bulldogs in their season opener on November 11. Intense, fiery defense coupled with an explosive offensive performance from junior Grant Whisman carried the Yellow Jackets to a 79-51 victory. Cedarville’s defense suffocated Truman State’s offense from the opening tip, snuffing out scoring chances through blocks and steals. The ...
