The Cedarville Lady Jackets got rid of any question of their dominance as they took down the Lake Erie Storm 112-58 for their first triple digit performance of the season. Lake Erie nearly upset the red hot Jackets just Saturday as Cedarville came away with a narrow 58-55 victory over the winless Storm. The Jackets remain way on top of the G-MAC standings thanks to their 12 game winning streak.
Monday’s contest was a night and day difference compared to Saturday in terms of the Jackets’ performance. They topped their score from Saturday’s game in just the first half. The team shot 54.9 percent and 61.3 percent from deep.
Every single Cedarville player got points on the board, with six players in double digits. They were led by sophomore Isabelle Bolender with 17. Sophomore Paige Garr and sophomore Abby Freeman added 14 points a piece, contributing three and four 3-pointers, respectively. Junior Emily Chapman and senior Ashlyn Huffman both added 13 points.
Lake Erie came out looking like they had unfinished business after the Jackets stripped them of what would have been their first win just Saturday night. Despite their intensity, it didn’t take long for the Jackets to go up 9-1. The Storm couldn’t shake them and the Jackets led 17-3 going into the game’s first media timeout.
Cedarville remained dominant on both ends of the court, running a consistent offense and a locked down defense. The Jackets weren’t draining everything, however they were controlling possession and keeping the game on their end of the court. They finished the first quarter up 27-14 over the Storm. Huffman led the Lady Jackets early with nine points in the first quarter.
The second quarter started a little slower as both teams were playing tough defense. Huffman continued her dominate night, running her team’s offense to open up shots and leave the Storm watching. Head coach Kari Hoffman was able to put in some new faces as her team just kept rolling, going up 60-25 headed into the locker room. Huffman was still leading with 13 points, with all but one player also contributing in the first half.
Bolender came out of the half hot, scoring five points in the first three minutes. Garr went on a shooting spree, going on an eight point run all her own. With just forty seconds left in the third quarter freshman Lydia Sweeney drained a 3-pointer after which all Cedarville players had put points on the board. The Jackets added a whopping 31 points to their total in the third quarter, up 91-46 before the fourth.
Cedarville froze early in the fourth unable to put anything down until Bolender sank one from deep two and a half minutes in. Hoffman switched up her whole lineup at that point which slowed down the pace of the game slightly, but not enough to keep them from hitting the triple digit mark halfway through the quarter with a free throw from sophomore Allie Marshall. The Jackets were merciless and ended it 112-58, nearly doubling their score from Saturday.
The Lady Jackets are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Ohio Valley for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
