The Cedarville women’s basketball team could not keep pace with Urbana University’s hot shooting offense tonight, losing to the Blue Knights 91-96.
The visiting Blue Knights wasted no time getting started. Sinking their first four shots on their way to a 10-0 run, Coach Kirk Martin was forced to take a timeout just over two minutes into the game. Cedarville responded out of the timeout with a 10-0 run of their own. Urbana’s hot shooting continued as they shot over 50 percent for the first half and made seven of 11 three-point attempts. Cedarville kept pace thanks to making 17 of 20 free throw attempts. They went into the half trailing 44-47 after a last second put back by Deborah Gordon.
The Lady Jackets started the second half well, taking the lead for the first time less than four minutes into the half, forcing an Urbana timeout. They maintained a small lead for over 10 minutes before Urbana took the lead again with 3:03 remaining. Urbana slowly built on the lead to eight points, forcing the Lady Jackets to resort to fouling with 50 seconds remaining. In the end, the lead was too much to overcome and the game ended with Urbana winning 96-91.
The Lady Jackets were led in scoring by Kayla Jenerette’s 17 points. Kayla Linkous had 15, Raegan Ryan and Deborah Gordon each added 12 points, Kaysie Brittenham scored a season high 11, and Lauryn Robinson also had a season high with 10.
The loss gives Cedarville a 4-3 record on the season. They go on the road for three games throughout the rest of December, not returning for a home game until after the new year, opening G-MAC play by hosting Kentucky Wesleyan on Jan. 2.
