The Evolving Entertainment Culture

We live in an age in which internet subculture has become so expansive that its very references and behaviors impact “actual” culture at a constant rate, making it difficult to tell the two apart. In regards to the entertainment industry, not only has this phenomenon brought about new forms of entertainment, but it has also allowed prior forms to be distributed in increasingly creative ways. When the accessibility of the present age meets a multitalented performer, the possibilities are ...

‘Assassins’ Senior Theatre Project Goes Beyond Entertainment

It’s 1905 in Russia. A group of five revolutionaries are plotting to assassinate The Grand Duke, Sergei Alexandrovich. Their plans don’t go as they expect when their group faces its own conflicts, making them contemplate the consequences their actions could bring. This is what you will see in Ben Lenox’s senior theatre project, “The Just Assassins,” at 8 p.m. this Saturday in Alford Auditorium. The idea for the project came from a Directing II class Lenox took where he had to pick a ...

‘Alice’ Senior Theatre Project This Weekend Condenses Novels, Adds Dancing

Lewis Carroll’s timeless story of Alice in Wonderland is coming to life at 8 p.m. this Saturday in Alford Auditorium. “Alice, A Walk Through Wonderland,” the senior theatre project of Eric Rasmussen, combines the stories of Carroll’s two “Alice” novels into about an hour and half production – dancing included. “He's condensed it down into an adaptation that definitely shows his personality in how he has told that story in addition to being the choreographer and designing dance ...

The Studio Hosts Figure Drawing Event

The Carnegie Center for the Visual Arts was a tranquil environment Tuesday night. Nine students sat in a circle, intently focused on both the subject and their sketchpads. As students took their pencils and charcoal to the paper, the room felt serene with only the sound of scribbles, strokes and continuous ambient music to fill the soundscape. The artists’ subject sat motionless, allowing the stillness of the moment to take the room captive. Every student’s sketchpad bore a different ...

Student Spotlight – Brian McCray: Caricature Artist

For student artist Brian McCray, art is the expression of what humans feel and observe, he says. In fact, humans are the basis for McCray’s most famous work on campus. With his sketchbook in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other, McCray was ready to go to work, even though he was about to sit down for an interview. A sophomore graphic design major from Beavercreek, Ohio, his real claim to fame on campus is his ink pen caricatures. For many Cedarville students, their first ...

Album Review: ‘Dream Theater’

With the release of their eponymously-titled album on Sept. 24, the iconic band Dream Theater has put forth its 12th studio album in 24 years. Not only is the band’s constancy to be admired – it’s created new material every two years since its first album debuted in 1989 – but it is essentially the founder of the progressive metal genre as it’s known today. The band has always managed to incorporate moving, emotive choruses in major tonality alongside the pure and heavy tone of ...

Art Department Reworks Current Space

The renovations to the fine arts building in the past couple of years haven’t exactly been secret, but many students didn’t quite know what was happening when a drawing class took over the upper lounge area of the BTS in fall 2011. Some students may remember the odd-looking benches circled around an assortment of glass bottles, leather shoes and ceramic bowls, posing for a still-life sketch. All art classes for the fine arts building had to be repositioned; the building was under full ...

Review: Cast’s Personality, Humor Tops Off ‘Shrew’ Performance

Opening night of Cedarville’s “The Taming of the Shrew” was a success and not only because it was performed to a full house. From the first words sung on stage by the “Shrew Crew,” as the six-person ensemble has been dubbed, to the thunderous applause after the closing scene, the theatre never saw a dull moment. Members of the audience were immediately drawn into the action on stage. In the midst of Padua, a 1950s “Little Italy” community, we witness a struggle for love. There ...

Cedarville’s ‘Taming of the Shrew’ Takes Shakespeare to the 1950s

Cedarville's theatre program has modernized Shakespeare’s comedic love story, “The Taming of the Shrew.” It is showing Oct. 3-13. Professor and show director Matt Moore has changed the setting from a city-state in Italy during the Italian Renaissance to Little Italy in the 1950s and added a singing group known as the “Shrew Crew” to help propel the story along. “They (the Shrew Crew) are the ones who really help us feel the 1950s because of the music,” Moore said. “The six ...
