Editors’ Picks 2013-2014

Movies: “The Lego Movie” It seems like “The Lego Movie” was swept aside in light of much bigger and supposedly more important movies surrounding its release. If you missed this gem, go see it, even if you never liked Legos. While the movie is basically a giant Lego commercial, the combination of a great storyline, pristine animation, quirky characters and a beautiful message created a movie about plastic toys on par with the “Toy Story” series. It is nearly impossible to finish ...

Jesse Bowser: Apparel Designer

The sky — or rather his dorm room – is the limit for sophomore Jesse Bowser. Bowser, a graphic design major, uses his dorm room as a design studio for his apparel design business, Vernos Apparel, through which he sells T-shirts and sweatshirts with hand-printed designs he created. “At the moment it’s all hand-done,” Bowser said. “I do it just out of a dorm. Everything people own has been 100 percent hand printed by myself.” Bowser said his process includes sketching a design ...

Movie Review: ‘Divergent’

Dystopian fiction is the latest craze in literature and film. In film, it started with the 2012 release of the first “Hunger Games” movie. For the last two years, it seems like there has been at least one new dystopian movie in theaters every week. Many of the movies are adaptations of books with large followings. “Divergent” fits into both categories. The first book in the trilogy by Veronica Roth was released in 2011. Soon after, a cult-like following began demanding a movie and ...

Movie Review: ‘The Desolation of Smaug’

“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” is a middle installment in a trilogy, but viewers aren’t pitched into the middle of the action. As always, director Peter Jackson eases viewers in with a flashback to this movie released on DVD April 8. “The Desolation of Smaug” covers six chapters of the book, but Jackson did not leave the story as is. He incorporated material from the appendices and J.R.R. Tolkien’s history of Middle-Earth, “The Silmarillion,” to explain elements of the ...

Review: ‘The 39 Steps’

Cedarville University’s theatre program has had one of its most popular seasons in years. Ticket sales records were set in the fall for the Shakespeare classic “The Taming of the Shrew” and in the winter for “Pride and Prejudice.” Topping off the 2013-14 season is “The 39 Steps,” and the stakes are high. Fortunately, however, “The 39 Steps” proves to be one of the most unusual Cedarville productions in recent memory, ending the year with a bang. Audiences anticipating “The ...

The fast-paced comedy “The 39 Steps” is the second production at Cedarville for which a student has co-designed the set. And this year that student is senior Gisela Mullican, a theatre major studying design. Mullican has worked with theatre professor Robert Clements throughout the design process, as did 2013 graduate Josiah Smith for last winter’s musical, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” Mullican said she thought highly of the opportunity for a student to design the ...
