Kasich, Clinton Win Ohio

Republican presidential candidate and Ohio governor John Kasich won his home state Tuesday in Ohio’s primary election with 46.1 percent of the vote at 11 p.m., awarding him all of the state’s 66 delegates. Several national news outlets called the victory just before 8:45 p.m. ET Tuesday.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton took the Ohio victory over fellow candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). As of 11 p.m. with 85 percent of precincts reporting, Clinton received 56.3 percent of the votes, and Sanders received 42.9 percent. Delegates will be awarded proportionally in the state for Democratic candidates when all votes have been received.

Kasich delivered his victory speech to a crowd of supporters in Berea, Ohio, at his campaign’s headquarters.

“I have to thank the people of the great state of Ohio, because I love you,” Kasich said to cheers of “Kasich! Kasich! Kasich!”

Kasich said he’s put “it all on the line,” as has his family thus far in his presidential campaign, and he said he won’t compromise his character to get to the presidency.

“I want to remind you again tonight that I will not take the low road to the highest office in the land,” Kasich said.

The governor said the job of the American people is to never underestimate their ability to change the world, as the essence of America lies in the everyday person, not the “big-time politician.”

“What I learned from my mother and father is that the spirit of America rests in us,” Kasich said. “It doesn’t rest in a big-time politician.”

Fox News anchors noted that Kasich has won 13 out of 13 Ohio elections in which he’s been a candidate. In other words, he’s never lost an election in Ohio.

“And all I can say is thank you from the bottom of my heart,” Kasich said.

At the time of publication, Kasich was not projected to win any other state’s March 15 primary.
