Movie Review: ‘The Maze Runner’

When Thomas wakes in a supply-filled box, hurtling up an elevator-like shaft, he finds his memory is a blank slate. He knows nothing — not how or why he got there, or even where here is. He can’t even remember his name. The box opens upon reaching the top of the shaft and Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) is introduced to his new home called the Glade, a camp of sorts, inhabited by a group of teenage boys. Thomas soon learns that all of the boys arrive at the Glade in the same way, once a ...

Kyria Luxon makes people smile, then snaps a picture. “I was photographed by her once for a project,” said Brian McCray, a junior graphic design major and classmate of Luxon. “She seems to get energy from people. I think she enjoys photographing other people for that reason.” Luxon said enthusiasm makes her photo shoots successful. “A lot of people say that they’re camera shy, that they don’t like being photographed,” Luxon said. “But I tend to get so excited ...

Editors’ Picks 2013-2014

Movies: “The Lego Movie” It seems like “The Lego Movie” was swept aside in light of much bigger and supposedly more important movies surrounding its release. If you missed this gem, go see it, even if you never liked Legos. While the movie is basically a giant Lego commercial, the combination of a great storyline, pristine animation, quirky characters and a beautiful message created a movie about plastic toys on par with the “Toy Story” series. It is nearly impossible to finish ...

Jesse Bowser: Apparel Designer

The sky — or rather his dorm room – is the limit for sophomore Jesse Bowser. Bowser, a graphic design major, uses his dorm room as a design studio for his apparel design business, Vernos Apparel, through which he sells T-shirts and sweatshirts with hand-printed designs he created. “At the moment it’s all hand-done,” Bowser said. “I do it just out of a dorm. Everything people own has been 100 percent hand printed by myself.” Bowser said his process includes sketching a design ...

Movie Review: ‘Divergent’

Dystopian fiction is the latest craze in literature and film. In film, it started with the 2012 release of the first “Hunger Games” movie. For the last two years, it seems like there has been at least one new dystopian movie in theaters every week. Many of the movies are adaptations of books with large followings. “Divergent” fits into both categories. The first book in the trilogy by Veronica Roth was released in 2011. Soon after, a cult-like following began demanding a movie and ...

Movie Review: ‘The Desolation of Smaug’

“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” is a middle installment in a trilogy, but viewers aren’t pitched into the middle of the action. As always, director Peter Jackson eases viewers in with a flashback to this movie released on DVD April 8. “The Desolation of Smaug” covers six chapters of the book, but Jackson did not leave the story as is. He incorporated material from the appendices and J.R.R. Tolkien’s history of Middle-Earth, “The Silmarillion,” to explain elements of the ...
